On my way down to southern Ontario for a week, I stopped several times for short hikes. At my first stop I came across this spectacular caterpillar feeding on virginia creeper. When I looked further, I found a second one. On the way home, near Mono Mills, hundreds of kms from this site, I found another one, feeding on wild grape leaves. These are two of its main food sources. This big caterpillar can be this colour, or it can be pink, green or yellow! It withdraws its head into a sort of "hood" when alarmed.
