Despite the wind and the cooler temperatures (about +14c), there was a lot of insect activity along the trail I walked today, including this beautiful big fly. This hover fly (Syrphid), is a very good yellowjacket mimic. As it buzzes by, it looks like a large wasp, but of course, is not. For one thing, look at the eyes, they are not the eyes of a Hymenopteran, and the short antennae are characteristic of flies. But nonetheless, a very good mimic!
