Came across a big pitcher plant yesterday, while exploring the edge of a bog. This is a closeup of the inside of a "pitcher", showing the fierce looking spines that prevent a trapped insect from climbing back out. Pitcher plants are carnivorous. Their "pitcher" at the base of the flowering stalk, fills with water and serves as a pit trap, because insects climbing down, lured by nectar, fall into the water and cannot get back out, prevented by these downward pointing spines. The plant digests their decomposing bodies via an enzyme the plants release into the water. Amazing, eh?
