Horned spanworm caterpillar (Nematocampa resistaria), #7010

These are fascinating caterpillars with their little "horns" or tentacles. When alarmed, these tentacles will grow considerably. I guess this caterpillar was feeling quite relaxed. It is thought that this is a fairly unique reaction amongst caterpillars. Horned Spanworm moths are in the Geometridae family.

It is already a decorative caterpillar. A kind of ballet danser pose :)
Fabulous found again!

This one kind of looks like an alien. Interesting facts about the horns growing. Maybe Sheila has a good idea. :) Super close up. V.

Yes you can see there is room for the horns to grow. Maybe if you tickled him with a leaf he would go into frightening mode :-)
