Coral fungi are common even in summer when we don't expect to see many mushrooms or other fungi. I find them to be quite beautiful though often very difficult to identify. As George Barron, mushroom expert says "the criteria used to distinguish them are based on microscopic features" so that even getting them to Genus can be questionable. You'll often find them growing in large mounds, covering quite an area, but there are other types of coral fungi that look nothing like this!
