I was sitting on a rock in the Nortel woods, when I heard a very loud gnawing sound coming from behind. I could see nothing at first and wondered where on earth it was coming from. Eventually I located this red squirrel in between the roots of a white cedar. She was very, very busy and even my presence, as crept closer, couldn't deter her from returning again and again to gnaw away at the inside of this tree. Several time she came out and ate something, then went back to work. Eventually she left for good and I took a look inside, but all I could see was a scattering of soft wood shavings. Nearby was a cache of Bitternut hickory nuts, which had clearly just been dug up.
