I've been thinking about pouring some salt or sugar on a white paper (in a mound sort of) and lighting it from different angles. I have no idea if it would actually be interesting. But if you've got some different colored spices, like cumun and paprika and something white and maybe some pepper, four small piles on a white sheet of paper might look neat. But, then I'm postng fire hydrants and nobody's much excited.

Something was bugging me about my response and I finally figured out what it was. My suggestion was directed more toward someone with less photographic experience. You're obviously well beyond that. So I apolgize for that. I'm used to trying to explain photographic principles to my non-photography oriented coworkers.

And the other thing is I belive your were seeking more of a creative suggestion than a technical one. I agree with trying some pics with the spices not in the canisters. I think my suggestion would draw more attention to the spice rack than the spices.

Not sure what lenses you have at your disposal but my thought would be use DOF to your advantage. Open the lens all the way and shoot with several of the canisters in view and focus on one to draw the attention you want. With any luck the others should be blurred. A fairly long lens works well for this. Just my 1.953 cents worth.

Ah good point. I agree with you, I'm not very attracted by spices. But was trying something different. I will practice and see what happens. I never thought of taking them out of the canister. Duh. That could have worked out. Thanks Ray.

I think its the perspex cover that is causing the main problem here. It dulls the photo. Whilst I'm not into spices, I doubt if its easy, but if you are going to choose these ones here, I would display them in the open and break it up with a sprig of some herb, or perhaps some kitchen related object. I think after some practice you will succeed in a very good photo.
