That's Montague Island on the horizon. I have wanted to go there for years. Narooma Charters
run boat trips out to the island; that's the only way ordinary people can get there. Last time
I booked (2007) the trip was cancelled because there were only four passengers booked.
Not enough. This time, I made enquiries two weeks ahead. No, the "sunset cruise" described on
their web page wasn't running but there was a 3-hour morning cruise including a tour of the island
with a National Parks ranger. Great, I said, and gave my name, mobile phone number and credit
card details. Then I rang the afternoon before to check. No, they had no record of me and there
was no trip, sorry. Then half an hour later a call on my phone from Narooma Charters, to confirm
my booking on a five-hour fishing trip. No, I said, that was not the trip I booked, and hadn't
somebody just told me I wasn't booked on the trip I wanted? Apologies. Then ten minutes later,
another call from Narooma Charters; sorry, we were confused about the booking, yes we have your
booking, we had you down for the fishing trip, sorry, and yes there is parking at the wharf. But
just as we were about to leave the motel in the morning, another call from Narooma Charters: just
checking, sir, there are six of you, is that right? No, just two. Sorry, we can't do the trip then.
I took this picture about an hour later. Somebody was going to Montague Island. Just not us.
