The Elbe River rises in northern Bohemia (Czech Republic) and flows northerly through Germany, passing through Dresden, Wittenberg, Magdeburg and a number of smaller cities before emptying into the North Sea at the port of Hamburg. It's course is mainly pastoral for most of this distance. Our cruise began in Tangermunde, west of Berlin, after we had spent several days in Berlin.
