This little gem was one of those unexpected species. There were so many potential birds to look at when we were planning for the Ecuador trip... sometimes we found a bird in the field that totally surprized us, or at least me. This was one of those. As much fun as it is to recognize a species the first time you encounter it in the field from prior study of the identification guide, it is also fun to just be totally surprised by a new, completely unexpected bird.
