I just got a cochlear implant and heard sounds for the first time
in my life on August 23, 2007.

This year I am going to try to take pictures of what it's like to
be hearing sounds for the first time.

"Picture A Day" (PAD)

I started this project back in 2005 and thought I would be taking a picture a "day"
for the year 2005, but as the years progressed, I saw the exploration of deafness
as an ongoing daily thing. I have tons of notes jotted down everywhere with
ideas I want to do but so little time! I eventually hope to finish up the project
this year, (2007).

About me....

My name is Julie Ann

I was born completely deaf. I grew up using both Cued Speech and Oralism.
I want to share with you what my life is like being a deaf Mom and friend.
I am finally learning some basic signs.

I hope to show you through my eyes what I "hear" every day and share my world.
How I think, feel, and see. I hope my photos reflect how beautiful
or ugly Deafness can be.

Hi Julie
I am deaf and based in England and at the moment doing my BA (Hon) photography for the next 2 years.
I was inspired and in awesome about your photography works and will be doing a project module in photography titled "being Deaf" about the struggled of people being deaf in a hearing world.
I will be using your inspirations for my project works (pardon the punt!) and hopefully it will come out well as for my academic writing too!

Hi Julie,
Great photographs that inspired me to work with Deaf volunteer photographs to do a workshop with Deaf children with cochlear implants. The workshop's best photos were mounted into a one week exhibit in observance of the Deaf Awareness Week in the Philippines title: Silent Eyes- Photography with a Difference. Will email you posters and some photos on the exhibit. Hope to learn more from you as I too journey into the silent world of my 3 years old granddaughter who's getting a first cochlear implant on the 15th of December.

Love it! Im studying to be an interpreter at San Antonio College here in Tx. Im also getting my teachers cert. at Texas State and currently taking a required art class. I want to do my final project-which was chosen at our personal disgression- on Deaf artwork and was thinking that photography would be my focus. Speaking of which I am only 14, and in ASL, but we are doing a project on our favorites of the Deaf, and of course i would choose you. The deaf person in my family was my elderly Aunt Annie. She lived with us when I was a child and I was her legal guardian at the end of her life. Deaf from early childhood, she was fortunate to go to the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, where she learned to read lips. She was a career maid, a presumably simple person. But this was not true. I learned from taking care of her that her mind was sharp. Lip reading and hearing aids served her resonably well until she developed macular degeneration in the last years. With the loss of her center vsion it became harder and harder to talk to her but she could still tell the stories. She lived to be 93. This important gallery makes me think of her. How wonderful you have had cochlear implants that let you hear some. Bill

Once again, I checked..and see several new images. Excellent work!
I have just recently asked to shoot the basketball tournament games. It is really difficulty job! Not the best, I reckon, but done my best. I think I prefer the still photography.

Yes, I have 5/12 and 5/21! The 5/12 picture is on the other computer which I haven't had a chance to burn on a cd and transfer to my laptop which I use primarily. The other computer doesn't have internet connection. For 5/21---it had to be taken via film because I forgot to take my digital camera to a location that day. I actually stopped at a gas station to pick up a cheap throw away camera. Will be posting both VERY soon. Blessings Julie Ann
