Trujillo. Arco del Triunfo

This beautiful gate was one of the original seven entryways of the muralla. Built in gothic design, it is also known as the Puerta de Fernán Ruiz de Altamirano. The two names of the arch are both connected with the gate’s importance in the re-conquest of the city by the Christians. It was at this gate that, according to legend, the apparition of the Virgin of Victory appeared to the Christians and promised a victory over the Moors. Also according to legend, a Christian living inside the Moorish community named Altamirano opened the gate for the Christians to conquer the city. Adorning the gate are the family shields of the Añascos, the Altamiranos, the Bejaranos, and the Catholic monarchs in tribute to those families most active in the re-conquest of Trujillo. Thus on January 25, 1232, Trujillo was re-Christianized thanks to the Virgin of Victory, Trujillo’s patron saint, and to the opening of the “Arch of Triumph”.
