Within St. Lorenz Church there are two art treasures: a crucifix from around 1500 and a very valuable altar, named Hertnid-von-Stein-Altar after the man who donated it. Originally it was intended for St. Michael’s Church, but it was transferred to St. Lorenz in the 16th century. This was very fortunate, because it would otherwise have been destroyed by the great fire of 1823, which destroyed much of the city and did not spare St Michael’s.
