The Iola Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Rochester, NY was built between 1911 and 1931. It closed in 1964.

My Father passed away at Iola in 1948 at the age of 25. Frederick R. Marshall. Also his sister Ruth Marshall. If anyone has any information I would sincerely appreciate it

my uncle Owen Slowey was a resident of Iola from 1940 till 1952 this kind man stayed with us in 1939 we he died 4-6-1952 is there anything available from Iolas Archives or anyplace a letter ,a note , a visitor a personal possession anything at all for us to have an insight into his life in Rochester N.Y.

I was one of the last six patients to be discharged from this place in June 1964. I was nineteen yrs. old at the time and had been there since March if 1963. I have many fond memories of that place as well as of the people I met there.I was one of the youngest people there and it's hard to express the loneliness I felt being in a place like that during my prime years. I used to sneak out a lot...take a bus and come home to hang out with my friends. Doctors weren't happy about that so they placed me next to the nurses' office so they could keep an eye on me. I quickly recovered and was then placed in another part of the facility named cottage C-1. Other than being cured, other good things came from my stay at IOLA. I took my first painting lessons,I'm a full time painter now and produce watercolors. Also,I had plenty of time to practice drumming rudiments on pillows.I met a kid about my age, also a patient there with whom I started a band in the summer of 1964 after our discharge. I became a professional drummer in many bands until 1972.Although it wasn't a very pleasant experience It's funny how I miss that campus as it was back in the 60's.I've also photographed what was left of the facility a few years ago and have produced a few paintings to commemorate the place. It was sad to hear it was torn down.The connection I had to IOLA was terminated as was the source of so many memories gone forever.

A suggestion to find some kind of patient rolls: Look up the Census data for the years 1930 and prior to that. Every 72 years they open up a new Census, and the latest opened was 1940. Try the Rochester Public Library for access to their free online database of census records...otherwise you'd have to pay for access thru Ancestry.com. Go to Iola Sanitarium to find lists of patients.

Just explored this amazing edifice today and am curious about its history now...it will be destroyed by the city at the end of this month, unfortunately...:(

1933 LETTER FROM: Em. R. Thompson (Iola Sanitarium) TO her nephew, my father, Marvin Louis Thompson, Bostonia, California. THE ENVELOPE is postmarked Rochester N.Y. September 21, 9 PM 1933 and was sent using a 3 cent George Washington Postal Stamp). SUBJECT: My father's impending marriage to my mother, kind advice, and a 21st birthday present which he admired since a little both, i.e., his grandmother's diamond wedding ring, and old pictures my father admired, and was given $10 by mail ($180 2012 dollars) for a gift. My grandmother was 27 years old when she died at Iola in 1941, leaving behind three young children. My father remembers standing below her window (because, as children, they were not allowed on the ward), and the nurse wheeling my grandmother up to the window so she could wave to them. She was so weakened by the end that the nurse would help her raise her arm to wave to her own sons and daughter. Thank you for posting these photos of Iola. This is a part of my history, albeit a tragic one.

thank you, my grandmother passed away here in 1920's leaving 2 very young daughters - now i can see the windows my mother of 8 years could see her mother.

It's a wonderful area, on the inside you could tell that it was a beautiful building. HINT: If you'd like to go inside, there's an open door on the southwest end (to your right side if you're facing it from Iola Circle/Campus)

my dad died here at age 23 in 1949 of TB-leaving a wife and 2 babies.Doesn't look like a very nice place to pass away in.Wonder how many souls passed in this place of TB?

Why do you like ruins ? Probably because the only subject of photography is Time. A good illlustration.
