Mae Hong Son

Situated in a deep valley and hemmed in by high mountains, Mae Hong Son is covered with morning mist throughout the year, thus giving it the nickname "City of a Million Mists". The city was founded in 1831 as a training camp for elephants captured from the surrounding jungle. Bordering on Burma and populated by a number of hill tribes, Mae Hong Son shows strong Burmese influence in its temples, its dialect and its festivals.
