Another travel adventure to another island. This time it was Lanai. Our mode of travel was by a large catamaran ferry. The passage was about 50 minutes. On the way over it was calm so we sat out on deck. On the way back, the wind had come up so we elected to stay inside. Today's photo is of Ginny relaxing on the ride back.
Lanai was a major center for the pineapple business, but that is all gone now. There are other places with cheaper labor in the world. Our guide was a native so again we had an interesting perspective on the whole thing. As you know, Larry Ellison owns 98% of the island. From what we saw he is doing things to improve conditions. There are two very swanky resorts on the island, but not much besides that. Ellison is experimenting with agricultural projects. He can't just start developing and building because the island government has to approve everything. Sort of a Mexican stand-off.
