April 30, 2019

Today was our last trip to Pearl Harbor. This time it was to see the USS Missouri battleship. You may remember that this was the ship the surrender of the Japanese was signed in September of 1945. That was in Tokyo Bay. From what the guides told us, the Missouri was the last battleship built and the last battleship to be decommissioned. We took several tours through the ship. It is utterly amazing how complex and large this vessel is. One of the interesting things to me was the 16 inch guns. I would dearly love to witness them firing in person. Alas that will never happen. Today's photo is a classic shot of the big guns. We found out that the aiming and firing of the guns was controlled well below decks. We even got to pull the trigger. Nothing happened, but I could dream about 660 pounds of cordite igniting and sending the shell on a 23 mile journey.
