We love museums. We spend lots of time in them and try to absorb as much as possible. Today we went to the Mariner's Museum in Newport News. As you might expect it is about boats and ships. They have lots of stuff. The most interesting by far is that this is where the USS Monitor is being preserved. There are several parts of the ship that have been preserved and are on display, including the screw and a piece of the drive shaft. The biggest piece undergoing preservation is the turret. They use an electrochemical process to reduce the iron ions and remove chloride. All you can see in the tank in which this is going on and a faint outline of the turret. The people there said it was going to be another 11 years before it is completed. This was very near the top of my all time coolness list.
