The controversial statue of Oliver Cromwell (1599 - 1658) at Westminster, photo circa 1904
A bill was introduced into parliament for the statue in 1865 but it was defeated, after several more defeats over the years it was finally approved in 1895 by a small margin, the statue was installed in 1899 (paid for by a private donation).
There have been calls in parliament for the statues removal as recently as 2004.
