Well spotted John.
Old cars back then would lose water from the Radiator in the summer.
Putting a plastic bottle on the end of the radiator overflow pipe collected the water, and as the radiator cooled it sucked the water back up into the radiator.
No more topping up.
Of course I experimented with various configurations, this was a twin bottle one. not needed, one worked perfectly.
