A speedometer.

The river bed at Putney view map

One of the many strange objects that people take all the way to the river to throw in.
Maybe its a kind of sacrificial offering.

Jamie, why would a Neilsen Kellerman cox box have a dial on the front graduated in MPH up to 140. There aint no row boat on the Thames that travels that fast ?.

thats not a speedo, thats a neilsen kellerman cox box - it plugs in to a mic and a speaker system in fours and eights so the cox can speak to the crew.

either a cox dropped it or it fell out when a boat turned turtle.

Dave, just in case your question was serious. The Thames flows at about 3 mph here.
Both ways as it is tidal. At about 55 miles from the sea here that is quite a good speed.

Very good Jason, and topical as a bonus.

Makes perfect sense. An offering to the god of swimming and running water. Speedo.

How fast was the river going?
