Answer....
The memorial was erected shortly after the Indian Mutiny.

The inscription reads IN MEMORY OF COMRADES WHO FELL DURING THE INDIAN CAMPAIGNS OF 1857, 1858 AND 1859. ERECTED BY THE 1st BATTALION 60th ROYAL RIFLES AUGUST 1861.

Can you tell me to what "the Monument" as I knew it (behind the yacht club, near where the AA offices, other Admin. offices were in the '60s) was dedicated ? It appears on old postcards I have, preceding WWI. Thanks in advance to Dovorians/Historians...
