As I sat in a coffee house on Castro Street, I saw her standing outside the window at the
bus stop. Hidden behind the bus pass, hanging from her neck, is a pack of cigarettes. She
stood there waiting, smoking one cigarette after another. She must have had a $50 a day habit.
