Theodore Roosevelt National Park - North Unit – North Dakota

The North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is approximately 68 miles from the entrance of the South Unit. In order to be able to catch a little of the morning light, and to avoid the heat of the day, I got up at 5 a.m. and arrived at the North Unit entrance a little after six. The park road here is fourteen miles long with several overlooks and trails. Much like the South Unit the views of the badlands, especially in early morning light, is spectacular. On a hike down to the Little Missouri River I was lucky enough to find the Longhorn Steer herd which is maintained here as a reminder of the local cattle industry and its historic link to the area.
