Luxor, used to be named Thebes, the greatest city of upper Egypt. The ancient Greek epic poet Homer described the old Thebes as "Thebes of the hundred gates".
Today in Luxor, the well perserved temples of Karnak and Luxor, the Kings Valley, Queens Valley, Tombs of Nobles on the west bank, and the countless temples in the area around, make the city the biggest open-air museum of the world.
