The Karnak temple complex contains a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings.
The temple was first built between about 1900 to 1700 BC, and later extended between about 1500 to 1100 BC.
The main parts in Karnak are:
Precinct of Amun-Re, the largest of the precincts of the temple complex, and is dedicated to Amun-Re, the chief god of the Theban Triad;
Precinct of Montu, dedicated to the son of Amun-Re and Mut, Montu, the war-god of the Theban Triad;
Precinct of Mut, dedicated to the mother goddess, of the Theban Triad, Mut;
Temple of Amenhotep IV, the temple constructed by Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) on site.
