June 27, 2006

There are few things in the ocean that move with more ease and grace in the water than a spotted eagle ray. They appear to expend no energy flowing through the water...in a way, they appear to be but a small extension of the water itself.
I wouldn't have had the chance to observe this wonderful creature if it wasn't for the generosity of Paul, the captain of the Red Sail dive boat which was my host for this morning's dives. As a courtesy, Paul practically took me by the hand as we navigated the North Wall of Grand Cayman at about 90 feet. Paul spotted these creatures, pointed them out, and guided me in pacing my advance torwards them in order to not scare them off. As a result, I managed to approach this eagle ray at close range, perhaps 8 feet, and fire off a photo or two.
Even though I had only a few moments with this creature, it was an experience that will stay with me for a very long time.
I'm grateful for the grace that the ocean holds and I thank Paul for guiding me through a small corner of it.
