Jonah on the BoardwalkFt Story Army Base, Virginia Beach. Jonah is heading for the beach Christmas Day 2002.
This won a Photo of the Day at www.Digitalphotocontest.com and at www.Bestfoto.com, and it won third place for the monthly contest in Black and White category at www.Digitalphotocontest.com. |
October 31, 2003"Not So Scary Monster"
Jonah found Josh's monster costume from two years ago and put it on this morning. The boys never let me take their photo, but Jonah agreed to sit down for a shot. I attached the Brolley to one of my Alien Bees 800 strobes and fired this test shot. He bailed on me before I could make any adjustments for a second shot, so it is a little hot on his facial highlights. With a busy three year old, one shot is all I get sometimes...
This beautiful shot won First Place in the Halloween Challenge on November 8, 2003 at www.dpchallenge.com. Hooray, my first Blue Ribbon at that site!
And it won a POTD at www.bestfoto.com on November 11, 2003, and tied for third in the Best of Month voting! |
April 10, 2004"Do Over"
This is a re-edit of my shot from 3-24-04. I used a tighter crop, and darkened the left side of the eye to make it more realistic. I think this version works much better... |
October 6, 2003"Early Morning Light"
Ethan in the early morning light coming through the living room window. |
January 07, 2004"Jonah"
I have to say, Jonah seems to be the most photogenic of the three boys, although Ethan does well, too. Josh has gotten to the point that he either does not want his picture taken, or he gives me a forced smile... I'd better shoot Jonah and Ethan all I can before they get to that stage!
This image of Jonah was chosen to be the Photo of the Week at www.DigitalPhotoCritique.com!!
|
December 13, 2003"James Version 2"
This is my nephew James. I played with this a little in Photoshop, the most noticeble change is the 'graininess' I added. |
Vacation Pic 9"Beautiful Tracy"
Tracy was pushing our youngest (Ethan) in the swing and I caught her as she glanced up at me... |
Vacation Pic 2This is Stefi, my very beautiful and very sweet sister-in-law from Germany. My brother was also in this photo, but I cloned him out! LOL |
April 17, 2004"Alex the Pirate"
Alex is one of the neighborhood boys. He came over and played pirates with Josh for awhile. I used my 70-200mm f4.0L lens to stay out of the action so they wouldn't notice me. I shot at 200mm trying to get some good candids. I snapped this one just as Alex looked my way... I thought about cloning out the dirt on his face, but decided it works with the whole pirate theme... |
October 11, 2003"Happy"
Simple pleasures work for Jonah. He was very happy to have a cup of milk at the Raven's Nest Coffee Shop (Institute and Boulder, for those in Colorado Springs).
This shot of Jonah won a POTD at www.digitalphotocontest.com on October 14, 2003! |
The Joshua TreeThis was shot at Mount Vernon (George Washington's estate).
I liked U2 during the eighties and nineties...
Had to get this shot and call it The Joshua Tree!
Mount Vernon is behind me, and the Potomac River is down the hill behind Josh. |
January 17, 2004"Ready to Learn"
Jonah wants to learn to play chess. He likes the idea of the game, but at three, he doesn't remember the moves different pieces can make. It shouldn't be long, though...
This shot was taken at the Raven's Nest Coffee Shop at Boulder and Institute in Colorado Springs (a little plug for owner and friend Paul Fay). |
April 16, 2004"Feels Like a Monday"
This is Ethan not getting his way. My three boys are all wonderful, but they have their trying moments here and there... |
September 13, 2003"Saying His Prayers"
I intentionally over-exposed this shot, hoping for a result like this. I didn't expect it to turn out so well, though! This shot is ranked (a finalist, so to speak) at www.DigitalPhotoContest.com. (9-8 to 9-14) |
Josh After BathJosh laid down on the couch after taking a bath, still wrapped up in his towel. The morning light was shining through the sliding glass window. I ran and got my camera and took a couple of shots before he noticed me. He never cooperates for pictures, so I have to get them when I can without him knowing! |
Vacation Pic 11"Four Sisters and a Mom"
This is my wife Tracy, my sister Shelli, my Mom Sharon, my sister Jorenda, and my sister-in-law Stefi! Notice they are all wearing the same necklace!
This shot won a POTD at www.bestfoto.com on December 09, 2003!! |
February 29, 2004"Learning"
This is another shot of Jonah working at the computer, in front of a bright window...
Contemplation for my 26 Things Part II |
September 23, 2003"Joshua Drew"
I just received my Alien Bees studio lights yesterday, and this is the result of my first efforts! I am very happy with this shot and look forward to doing more with the lights. This shot was accomplished with one strobe on 1/2 power, shot through a Brolley softbox, and a reflector to the dark side...
This shot won POTD at www.digitalphotocontest.com for the People/Portrait category on October 1, 2003. |
A Mother's LoveThis is one of my favorite photos. This was Tracy and Ethan in the summer of 2002 (around July??) |
Vacation Pic 5"Aubrey with Friends"
These are Aubrey's school friends. I remember piling all these guys into my car and taking them to the movies when they were in 5th grade. Much older and uglier now, but still lots of fun. LOL!! |
Vacation Pic 1"Home Safe from Iraq"
This is my brother Aubrey and his wife Stefi. We just visited with them in Indiana. Aubrey was injured in Iraq and has been recovering in Germany. We are so thankful that he is OK and that we had this time to visit!
This shot won second place at DPChallenge for their "Giving Thanks" challenge on December 5, 2003! |
September 27, 2003"I know the Way"
Josh, Jonah, Ethan, and I went for a hike this morning at Palmer Park. We met Tim, Kiera, and Eli at the top of the overlook. This is Ethan leading the way... |
Busted Lip - StormyJosh fell off the fence and got a fat lip. I converted to grayscale and changed to high contrast, then superimposed it on a stormy sky. Even though this image has a 'disturbing' feel to it, it is one of my favorites. To me, it portrays the sometimes 'stormy' aspect of childhood. |
Ethan Confident in Mud |
October 29, 2003"Forks are for Sissys"
Jonah is having a little spaghetti for lunch. He decided the "hand-shovel" method was more effective than a fork! I love his eyes in this shot! |
October 17, 2003This collaboration of two photos and some Photoshop creation won POTD at www.bestphoto.com on Oct 26, 2003 and at www.digitalphotocontest.com on November 6, 2003! Way to go Jonah!! It also won third place in the "Best of Month" voting at Bestfoto! |
Ethan Taylor AndersonEthan just turned one!! This is one of my favorite shots of Ethan. They just don't get any better than this! |
Candid Couple San FranciscoI thought this couples body language was very interesting (San Francisco, near Fisherman's Wharf). I shot this candid (see next photo for original), but the surroundings made it very mediocre. Blurring all but the interesting part of the photograph has saved it! |
October 19, 2003 |
Josh July 20, 2003As usual, Josh wouldn't cooperate for a photo. I paid him to sit still and stare at the camera for a few minutes. That's more cooperation than I usually get, and it only cost me a dollar! |
See My Muscles! DigArtThis was Josh at 3, showing off his muscles. I duplicated the layer four times in photoshop, setting blending modes for all layers to Overlay in order to create the high contrast. |
Jonah Black Eye |
November 29, 2003"Goalie"
This guy is the opposing team's goalie. He was very busy... CC won the game 4-0, freshman goalie Zaba's first shutout. |
Reflecting on Self Study 1DPChallenge_Black on Black_6.767_3/92 Third Place Ribbon!!
This image was a study in 'lowkey' photography. It won third place at DPChallenge, and it also won a 'Photo of the Day' at www.Digitalphotocontest.com. |
Three Muddy BoysThis won a POTD at www.bestfoto.com on february 8, 2005! |
September 14, 2003"City Kid"
Downtown-ish Colorado Springs, CO. Just chasing the kids around with the camera. My goal is to photograph them, their goal is to keep me from doing it, oh yeah, and to run out into the street, throw rocks, and eat bugs... Such is life with three boys. |
October 26, 2003"Scary Jonah"
This is a shot of Jonah practicing for Halloween. He has been practicing his scary faces all week! He is going to be a bat this year and Josh will be a Ninja. Ethan will be wearing a costume one of the boys wore in the past (not sure which one yet). |
Everlasting Gobstoppers!DPChallenge_The Future_6.215_20/77
After Willy Wonka, who wouldn't want an Everlasting Gobstopper? Josh's photo was taken in early 2003, everything else was created from scratch in Photoshop! |
December 20, 2003"My Patience is Gone"
Ethan decided he'd had enough of the Mall. He was ready to go do something fun and was not too shy about letting us know it. |
October 18, 2003"One Day Soon"
This younger kid wanted to play so bad. He was ooozing ambition and desire... He will be there, one day soon, I'm sure. |
Conversation with a Four year OldI shot this series of images of Josh in Spring of 2002 while he was telling me a story about pirates. He did not know I was taking pictures at the time! I composed them in Photoshop, adding the borders and text. This won a Photo of the Day at www.digitalphotocontest.com in the Digital Art category. |
Jonah Close-upDPChallenge_Fill the Frame_6.007_28/142 |
October 19, 2003"Driving Lessons"
Ethan found this cart abandoned at a strip mall. He pushed it around for about 10 minutes. He was determined to push it straight, but he mostly went back and forth, crashing off the curb several times. |
October 18, 2003"G Force"
Just a shot of Jonah on the swings after the football game. |
October 11, 2003"Just My Size"
Ethan picked one out for himself. He was not interested in the big ones his brothers wanted... |
October 5, 2003 One Boy"Joshua Drew"
Josh is my oldest at 5. He was very bored on the ride home from church. He was also upset that we were not going to stop at 7-11 for Slurpees! |
October 5, 2003 Jonah"Jonah Skylar"
Jonah is our middle boy at 3. We were out walking in the Autumn leaves that are falling everywhere. I laid down on the sidewalk to get this perspective. Our neighbors think I'm a little off kilter, but I'm OK with that.
This image won a POTD at www.digitalphotocontest.com on December 2, 2003 for the Black and White category!! |
October 5, 2003 Three Boys"Ethan Taylor"
Our youngest at 1. This was also during the ride home from church. This is just before he told me no pictures! My own kids consider me papparazzi! |
September 1, 2003"Drive by Painting"
Josh and Jonah painted Ethan today. He didn't seem to mind very much! They played in the sprinkler to get cleaned up when they were finished. |
September 2, 2003"Ready for School"
Josh started Kindergarten this year, and here he is in his uniform, waiting for his ride. One of his classmates (Aiden) takes him to school, and I pick them up in the afternoon. They wear school uniforms at the Cheyenne Mountain Charter Academy. |
September 12, 2003"Reading to My Brother"
Josh was able to read at 4, and his Kindergarten teacher says he is reading at the 3rd grade level now at 5. Here he is reading a story to Jonah. |
September 19, 2003"Jonah"
Just a fun candid of Jonah at the Raven's Nest... |
September 24, 2003"Me"
Well, this is sort of me... I copied half of my face and flipped it, giving two identical sides. It is a little strange, as no one has a completely symmetrical face... (9-22 to 9-28) |
September 26, 2003"I can do it!!"
Josh is doing awesome in school, so his reward was Rollerblades and pads. We bought them today, and with a little practice and a great deal of determination, he did it! Injury talley was one fat lip and a scrape, nothing broken! |
Air Force Academy Jump Team (8259)This shot won fifth place in the Adventure Theme Contest at www.digitalphotocontest.com, which is a cash prize contest! I think 5th pays $25! Woo Hoo... This also won a POTD at www.digitalphotocontest.com in the Action/Journalism category on September 4, 2003, and it won second place for Action/Journalism September '03 Best of Category. This win includes a prize (Alien Skin's Image Doctor $129 value). This Air Force Academy cadet was jumping in honor of the breast cancer survivors at the Race for the Cure Event August 10, 2003. I tried to get this shot with the first four jumpers, but missed. I got this final jumper as she passed by the sun. She was the only jumper in the group with a flag, so the timing worked out well! The bright sun flare caused some purple and green fringing anround the sunspot that was very difficult to deal with in Photoshop, hence the black and white!

Jonah Pikes Peak SunsetJonah enjoying the Sunset over Pikes Peak. Our viewpoint was the overlook at the top of Palmer Park. July 29, 2003 |
My Three SonsNo fancy photography or artwork here... Just my three wonderful boys! From left to right, Jonah (three), Ethan (one), and Josh (five). This shot was taken at my little sister's wedding on May 25, 2003 (Connor Prairie Historical Farm) |
Our Future (Josh Early Faith)DPChallenge_Stock Photography_5.866_41/90
Josh was actually watching TV, not posing for me (posing for a photo is against his personal ethics). This is probably one of my favorite shots of Josh... |
Josh as BiblemanJosh in his Bibleman get up, ready to save the World! |
Jonah Pebble Beach, CAI took this shot of Jonah at Pebble Beach in California in May 2003. That was a great place! We had lots of fun there. |

Two Brothers Surfing...Jonah and Ethan were surfing the web together. I shot this with just the computer monitor for lighting (Canon EOS 10D, 50mm f1.4, ISO 1600). It won a POTD at www.digitalphotocontest.com on Septermber 6, 2003. |
Jonah Surfing |
Half of MeI shot this image for the Self Portrait weekly challenge at www.fredmiranda.com. It made it as a finalist in that contest... |
Camera ShyI set the camera on a tripod, hung a black backdrop and used two 500 watt halogen worklights. Using the self timer, I took about 15 shots until I got one with an interesting expression on Ethan's face. Worth the time and effort! |
Ethan Pebble Beach, CAEthan at Pebble Beach, California. He liked sucking on the rocks and pebbles. I'm sure he got some kind of nutrition out of them! |

Something to EatTracy and I love this picture. Too bad Josh wasn't looking over Jonah's shoulder as well.
I need to start a trust fund now in order to feed three teenage boys all at the same time (coming soon in 12 years!) |

November 2, 2003"A Lost Opportunity II"
As parents, we have endless opportunities to interact with and shape our children into who they will be as adults. I like this shot, as it represents a lost chance for interaction that can rever be regained.
(Disclaimer... I do not know this family, but they did have a great time together. This photo does not represent their relationship from what I could see! My comments above represent what I see in this image, not what I saw of their time together at the book store! No offense intended.) |
November 2, 2003"So Many Choices"
Josh and Jonah are amazed with the number of choices at the bookstore! |
November 1, 2003"The Chase"
Quinn is a working dog, being mostly Blue Heeler (Austrailian Cattle Dog). She needs to get her exercise and do her work. Here is a shot of her herding Josh. She is so fast and he is so slow, it really isn't much work for her. |
November 7, 2003"Keeping Up With My Brothers"
Ethan has two older brothers, and has had a hard time keeping up, until now. He is one tough kid... When they make him mad, he runs them down, tackles them, then pounds on them. We need to put a stop to that, although the two older boys have deserved it for soooooo long! |
December 27, 2003"Get to the Point James"
James got a piercing the other day... I tried to narrow the focus to just the piercing and his eye... The blur in the photo was achieved with limited depth of field, not in post processing. The Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens can limit DOF to 1 mm at 2.8 and closest focusing distance!! |
December 26, 2003"Ethan"
Ethan taking a break from the action... |
December 25, 2003"Thank You Jesus"
Josh made a birthday card for Jesus, thanking him for his sacrifice in the name of all mankind. He did this on his own, without any coaching or ideas coming from us... He is a pretty neat kid!! |
Vacation Pic 4"Classic Aubrey"
At Aubrey's welcome home party... |
Vacation Pic 7"Hanging Out with Baby Jesus"
We went to the Circle in Indianapolis. There is a beautiful Episcopal church there, built in 1837. This is their nativity display outside. Our boys decided to be part of the scene, and this is Jonah hanging out with Baby Jesus! We try to encourage our boys to experience life instead of just observing it. I hope people perceive it as developing creativity and imagination, rather than being disrespectful. |
February 11, 2004"Archive from Summer"
It snowed today and is gray, overcast, and cold. I thought I would dig up a shot from summer. I found this one of Ethan from August 2003 at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. |
February 9, 2004"No Pictures Please"
Jonah preferred not to have his photo taken tonight. Instead, I got his very dirty hand! Shallow DOF was achieved with my Macro lens, not in editing... |
March 22, 2004 |
March 10, 2004"Chapped Lips"
I am starting a new job at Intel with a different consulting group tomorrow. I don't think I will have time for photos this week, so I am posting several today. If I have the chance, I'll post more this week, but don't expect to have the time. I hope everyone has a great week! |
February 28, 2004"Saturday Morning Bedhead"
This is Josh's typical look on Saturday mornings. His bedhead is a little 'tame' today compared to most mornings! |
