"Alex the Pirate"
Alex is one of the neighborhood boys. He came over and played pirates with Josh for awhile. I used my 70-200mm f4.0L lens to stay out of the action so they wouldn't notice me. I shot at 200mm trying to get some good candids. I snapped this one just as Alex looked my way... I thought about cloning out the dirt on his face, but decided it works with the whole pirate theme...

well, I must say , I had the same thought as Christopher.
ANd yes it was Afghanistan and they made a reportage last year to find the woman with the captivating eyes again. So big was the impact her eyes had on people.

Christopher,
Your comments floored me!! That NG cover photo of the girl in Afghanastan has always been my all time favorite photo for a portrait, maybe of all photos!! To be compared to that is the highest compliment I could imagine!! Thank you so much for visiting my gallery and sharing your thoughts!

You know when I saw this picture I recalled the only other time I can remember being captivated by a pair of eyes in a picture. It was the cover of National Geographic and the cover showed a young girl in Afghanistan. It was in the 80's I sem to recall.. But I wouldn't bet a dime on my memory..

Jeezum nice nice picture. You have an eye

Thanks for the comments! To convert to black and white, I use Image>Calculations in Photoshop. I select Source One Channel to gray, Source Two Channel to blue, and the blending mode is set to Screen at 50% opacity. For Results, select new document, and hit enter. If you don't select new document, then it creates a new channel. You then have to go to channels, select the new one on the bottom, and copy it to a new document or to a new layer in the existing file.
These settings usually get me close to where I want to be and a simple levels adjustment dials it in. This seems to work well for skin tones in BW. Keep in mind that these settings won't work for colorful images. You have to select the correct colors in the Source options and adjust your blending mode to get the results you want. There are thousands and thousands of different options!
