This trip was first planned to include the Big Island of Hawaii and American Samoa. However, first Hawaiian Airlines changed times, and then days of our flight to and from American Samoa, making it no longer work with the rest of the trip (we will try again next year). Then the recent eruptions at Kilauea Summit and along its Easter rift zone. This caused concerns about both where we were planning on staying and concerns about not being able to get where we could (safely) see the eruptions. So we dropped this part of the trip and extended out time on Maui. We were traveling with our friends Corinne and Larry and ended up covering virtually the entire island of Maui. We drove to the top of Haleakala National Park, did the full West side loop (clockwise) including the Iao Valley State Monument, took a full loop tour to Hana and around the south side back. Then drove as far as the road went along the Southeast coast, and finally hiked the boardwalk at Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge.
