Punta Rasa, 5-6 Apr 2007

These photographs were taken at Punta Rasa, c.60 km north of Rincon de Cobo and c.50 km north of Nueva Atlantis, on 5-6 April 2007, i.e. almost one year before the Rincon de Cobo/Nueva Atlantis individual. The photographs were circulated as unidentified orange-billed terns by Roberto Gueller after news of the Rincon de Cobo/Nueva Atlantis individual spread. Photographs 3, 5 & 7 appear to relate to the same individual (and, to my eyes, appears to be the strongest candidate for Elegant Tern [Thalasseus elegans]; the other photos all appear to relate to separate individuals. This bird is interesting, I would buy it as an Elegant if it wasn't for the head pattern which looks much more like that of a Royal. Elegants have a rater broad area of black around and behind the eye, they do not show the break behind the eye as Royal does, and as this bird does. Also Elegant is not as "bald headed" in its look as Royal. It makes me wonder if this is not an oddly shaped Royal, or if some of these questionable birds are Royal x ? (Cayenne?) hybrids.
