Rooster used for cock fighting. L1013301.jpg

Cock fighting is fairly popular on Pohnpei. Some have their rooster fight with their natural spurs and some use blades that are secured to the roosters leg where the natural spur is. This rooster had had its comb removed. I asked why but the young man who had the rooster did not know.

Many of these birds are fed as well as their owners or better, groomed, housed, protected from predators like snakes and civets, and generally treated as highly valuable livestock whether they fight or not. In temperate countries, removal of the comb and wattles, called "dubbing", is done to prevent the risk of frostbitten birds developing gangrene--and here in the US, a gamefowl bought just for exhibition shows can run well over $100 for a show-quality young bird untested in any kind of competition. I don't have any birds, but I do read a LOT.
