Alexander Stephens Was Thomas Swain's Attorney

Little Aleck, destined to become Vice-President of The Confederacy, was the personal attorney of Thomas Swain. It took him over 10 years to get his estate settled. He had to scratch his head over that one. Thomas Swain and Gen. John Coffee built the Coffee Road from Jacksonville, Ga. to Tallahassee, Fl. in 1822. Swain was one of Jacksonville's earliest settlers. The road to Tallahassee started at his river landing and ferry.

See Bullwhip Days: The Slaves Remember: An Oral History, edited by James Mellon for a primary source account. It contains narratives from the Federal Writer's Project. The very first one is that of Ms. Georgia Baker, who was a slave on Master Stephens' plantation in Crawfordville. She offers as rich and sympathetic portrait of the man and his devotion to his slave "family."

--A proud descendent of purportedly "naturally inferior" slaves from Master Stephen's plantation in Crawfordville, Ga.
