The Chapeh is an important member of the Mahori ensembles. The sound of the chords reminds of the buzzing sounds of a Sitar, because each chord runs over a thin metal plate vibrating against it and thus producing the buzzed sound. Decades ago these instruments were tuned in an equidistant scale.

This monochord from Vietnam is called "Dan Bao" and may be seen as the "national" instrument from Vietnam. It only performs overtones and thus has a very soft and recognizable sound.

The swelling pole is used to shift/untighten the chord, thus creating slides, tremoli and to reach all tones which are not covered by the overtones. It is no easy task to know how far you can bend the sweller in order to get the right pitch, so the Dan Bao is a very challenging instrument.

The gourd at the end of the chord is fixed to a swelling pole. It amplifies the swinging chord and also helps to develop a more solid voice. Actually most Dan Bao are amplified electrically as well, because this really low instrument otherwise wouldn't have a chance to compete in an ensemble.

The mouthbow is one of the most ancient instruments in the world. Maybe evolved from hunting bows, the player leans one end towards his mouth to use the mouth as a resonator, and while beating the string with the stick the mouth changes shape by forming vowels, thus changing the overtones.

Mundbögen findet man überall auf der Welt, und sie werden ebenfalls als Obertoninstrumente genutzt, da der Spieler den Rahmen an den Mund legt und druch Veränderung der Mundhöhle den Klang beeinflussen kann. Grundlage für dieses Instrument war wahrscheinlich einst ein Jagdbogen.

The two stringed spike fiddle Rebab from Indonesia is commonly heard in the Gmalean ensemble and reminds us of other spike fiddles called "Rabab" or "Rebabe" in Arabian and other Asian countries. The heart-shaped resonating box is covered with animal skin like a dried cow-bladder. This bowed instrument is also remarkable for its loose, smaller horsehair bow.

Die Spießgeige "Rebab" wird als Pendant der menschlichen Stimme im Gamelan Ensemble eingesetzt, und erinnert in ihrer Bauform an andere Spießgeigen Südostasiens. Bemerkenswert ist der sehr locker gespannte Roßhaar bogen und das aus einer getrockneten Kuhblase erstellte "Fell" des Instruments.

The playing technique for the Rebab is another link back to its Arabian heritage. It might have arrived in Indonesia with the first expansion of Islam in the 16th century.
The colourful clothing is depicting the female status of the Rebab, thus not allowing to perform this beauty "naked".

Der Name deutet auf einen nordafrikanischen Ursprung hin, und tatsächlich ist das Instrument mit dem Islam in Indonesien angekommen. Da das Instrument als weiblich gilt, darf es nicht unbekleidet gespielt werden und wird deshalb mit einem "Röckchen" versehen.

Diese Rebab hat am unteren Ende eine ungewöhnliche Befestigung der Saiten, die einfach durch Nägel gehalten werden. Am Stimmwirbelkasten ist ein Kopf zu erkennen.
