Mountain Zen Temple

Shiga-ken, Japan

This little known temple named "Kōshō-ji" is in the mountains of Shiga-ken. This temple is not on the major tour itineraries and has no ticket office or entry fee. According to the monk who we spoke to at the temple the gardens date back to the 14th century, and before it became a temple it was an estate belonging to Ashikaga who fled here from Kyoto. The type of Zen practiced in this temple is an older form, which predates the split into three schools.
