January week 4
No Child Left Behind

On January 8th, 2002, Hamilton was in the news. President Bush made "history" here, signing the "No Child Left Behind" education bill at our high school. As quoted from the President's statements that day,

"I want to thank all who have come to witness this historic moment. For those of you who have studied the history of our government, you know most bills are signed at the White House. But I decided to sign this bill in one of the most important places in America -- a public school."

With Hamilton being a strong Republican hold, and with the event happening only a few months after 9/11, it caused quite a stir locally. I live less than a mile from the high school and my day was constantly interrupted by the thundering sound of large military helicopters patroling our area. When the President was ready to land (0n the high school football stadium field), it sounded like a war zone - we had so many choppers in the air.

In June of 2004, this commemorative sculpture (by artist Jarrett Hawkins)was dedicated in front of the high school to preserve Hamilton's 15 minutes of fame!

Here is a close up of part of the statue:

Yep..that's the old Taft High School. I graduated from Garfield, which is now a middle school. They went back to the single high school in 1980 I believe. You would hardly recognize this as Taft, however, as there have been a multitude of major improvements made to the facility....a complete overhaul of the theater and creative arts wing, a new gymnasium, a huge addition with new classrooms, office space and more on the front of the building, a new stadium - just to name a few.

I plan on taking photos of all of the elementary schools at some point in this project because they are ALL going to be reaplaced! Most of them are quite old and are interesting looking buildings.

Your project is moving nicely :) I'm glad someone else has chosen to do this. Sometimes it seems mundane as you are doing it, but when your photo collection grows to hundreds of photos, it's really amazing to look through them, especially with any commentary you have provided :)
