Seeing Double
by jnconradie

Centurion, South Africa

Does this count as bokeh?

A sheet of black paper as background;
small holes in the paper lit with a strong rear light source;
plastic foil to give different colours to the pin-sized light points;
a secondary light source on the necklace.

A picture of the setup is at http://www.pbase.com/jnconradie/image/69728688

I have some more ideas in this direction,
but I first wanted to know whether this is "on topic"?

Great shot Nico. The lighting on the real necklace is really exquisite and the bokeh complement is highly creative. - Najinsky

Thanks, Vikas, Michael, Dorys and Brent, for the complimentary remarks. Much appreciated.

Dorys... no problem at all. :-)

Michael, your observation is perfectly correct and the suggestion also. There is SO much more one could do here, time permitting. One aspect is indeed to have the spacing of the "bokeh" necklace more similar to that of the real necklace and then also to try replicating the colours better. If I have more colours of the foils, I would certainly have loved to try creating a near perfect copy in the background. But... we leave that for a next occasion...!

Very nice! Kind of a head scratcher when you look at the patterns in the necklace and try and pick them out in the background- I was totally baffeled until I read your description. Works for me :-)

Ok, after reading all the comments I can see where this is perfectly on topic. The cleverness of the image was never in question. Sorry for thinking of this as "cheating the bokeh," Nico. :-)

Very nice shot, Nico. Image-inative is the best 'word' I can think of. Good job, as usual. One thing that does come to my mind is that the string of faceted 'jewels' could have been left off, making the two (bokeh & subject) more representative of one another. Just a thought ":^), not at all necessary. -mikey

What a great idea Nico and so well executed! Lovely shot and lovely bokeh. CJ

To me this shot is the essence of bokeh. A very big part of the photo is the OOF background blur. And by going out of your way to create by using the background blur, you've taken it to the next level. You are using the characteristics of your lens as a tool in the creation of the shot. Most of the time the background blur and its characteristics are just a matter of chance. In this case, you thought about what you wanted to achieve and used the bokeh of the lens to create the effect. Excellent, and I don't see how this could possibly be more on-topic. Jim H.

PS, don't you just love the bokeh of that non-L lens you're using?

Absolute perfection Nico, this is gorgeous. And I think it's perfect for the topic as well. My feeble brain was sort of trying to think up something vaguely along these lines, but I never would have thought of something this clever, or come up with something as nice as this. (I wouldn't even know how to...) Well done! --Melanie

hmmm... on topic? Seems like cheating the bokeh to me. LOL But the effect is stunning.
