As for the ones that say this city is a mess, your the ones that live by the image that you see. Beneath the pictures of old buildings and vacant structures is hope. We can and will rebuild this once thriving city and give it more than just new windows and paint! East St. Louis is a jewel filled with loving people who really do care. No matter how the world looks down on our city.

I read that East St Louis won an All American City award in 1959, what did they do? What accomplishment was it that generated this award? I am very interested in the rise and decline of these Mid-Western cities and wonder what they were like before their decline.

vivian, I grow up in east st louis, I am not proud of what the city has become but have always been proud to say tha this is my home,I have never been arrested have never been rob or shot at in this city, it is still my home and I love it,yes this city has been though a lot but for it to come back it will take tax dollars,If any of you has been home in the past few years you can see that the city is looking better, new housing has been built new gas stations @ 25th and state and 83rd and state new strip mall @25th and state, I can see that the people is trying to get the city back but it will take time and money so lets not talk about how bad they are doing and lets help them do better, take a trip back home, buy an old house and rehab it rent it out if you can not live their, spend your money in east st louis, do not go up the hill because the gas is four cent cheaper, leave your tax dollars in east st louis, do something instead of complaining about the city it is still our home, it was some of our children who got this city wre it is today, so lets clean up what we messed up, just saying.

I moved to San Diego in 1973. I recently went back home to E. St. L. It brought tears to my eyes. I do not have the answer. I hope someone much wiser than I can find a solution. However, I have no hope..what could you possibly do to correct such horrible conditions? Believe me, it will take a miracle....Sorry

Shirley, I definitley agree with you and several other positive comments. East St.Louis will always be home to me. I have lived on the west coast for twenty five years know and my family still lives there. I went to East Side and graduated in 1982. i was there for my brothers retirement in 2004 and honestly I had tears in my eyes. Thanks for those pictures who ever posted them they bring back a ton of good memories. Know matter what I will always love home.

This makes me so maddddd,I grew up in East.St. Louis, grandmother took me to the best stores downtown for Easter, sat at Woolworth counter, caught buses downtown, for the LOVE of JESUS,It is going to take a MIRACLE for EAST.St.Louis,I live in Ohio now, moved away in 1989,Where are all the hometown people that have made it out, don't you feel some kind of urgency or plea to do something?this pic is a expression of the chaos and hopelessness of the people, except God build the House(city)the labor in vain,It is going to take a sure move of God to clean out the Hatred,Murder,Drug Vices,Sexual Exploitation of our young women,Crime,Shady Politics, which has been there a long time, corrupt, corrupt police officers,Poverty,Fear,Dismay and Anxiety,I lived on 57 & 59 in State,Centreville,John De Shields Holmes, went to Washington Ele.,Morrison Ele.on 59 in State,Lansdown High,East St.Louis was a great, great town because it had great people there, all have moved away and have moved all support but I remember the respect of the elders we carried, the proud teachers, the sound of Lincoln Band, beautiful apple trees, grass and flowers, yes,I remember East St Louis,my beautiful parents,my strong grandmother,my school friends, the Respect of the people,my heart is sad because someone or many dropped the ball and now it seems like noone remember the Old landmarks or even care?they have let death enter the city, and now it is known as death city,my grandmother past last November,Mama Mildred, she stayed in John De Shield, worked at Lincoln High,I have wonderful memories of our neighbors and family, but somehow DEATH came to E.S.Louis and destroyed a beautiful city.Cowards have invaded the city of E.S. Louis and RATS and Ferocious DOGS have entered in and noone stood as protectors, thats why you have a downtown looking like this?????????????NO PROTECTORS,NOONE STOOD AT THE GATE,MOST LEFT AND SAID,WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!When they could have helped!!!!!!!!But I REMEMBER EAST.ST.LOUIS,my HOMETOWN

America's problem? I don't think so. How about the people who live there call it their problem and do something.
Immigrants in the early part of the 20th century helped build that town and worked in the meat packing industry, built their own businesses. They came with nothing, spoke pooor English but worked, bought homes, built their cultural "halls" (Polish Hall, Czech Hall), had their neighborhoods, educated their children. Those children left because the crime was so bad. I don't know if anyone can pinpoint where things started to slide downhill, but down it went. But don't tell me it's America's problem. Believe me - there were no affirmative action programs, small business loans, government grants or economic stimulus programs in the early 1900's when these people came to make it their home.
