May 16c: First effort

Rancho Bernardo, CA

What I learned this afternoon in my 50mm fixed focal length test was that I needed a tripod and higher f stop to get the depth of field needed to catch these carnations under artificial light.

About an 80% crop (there was lots of black space) and a mild saturation boost on the reds. No USM or levels.

***See here for fixed focal length explanation ***

These do remind me of this song:

A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)
Marty Robbins

A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm all dressed up for the dance
A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm all alone in romance

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams

A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm in a blue blue mood.

I'm all dressed up for the dance
I'm all alone in romance

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams

A white sport coat and a pink carnation
I'm in a blue blue mood.

Great shot Robin

We will see you in a 'white sports coat' to match the lyrics? Very nice beginning Robin. I'm going to try it too and I had to blow the dust and cobwebs off my 50mm practically to get started.

What lights are you using Robin? I like the way you can see around some of the stems to get the real 3d effect. It's gonna be a fun week.

I never knew all of the words to this song. Beautiful carnations.

Wonderful shot!

Not only do i know the song, I used to have the sheet music! This lens makes a great portrait lens, but it really takes practice with that shallow DOF at the larger aperatures. Where did you get these carnations?

Really nice Robin, almost seems like they're floating in space.

Pretty shot, you're off to a good start on the challenge.

Nice, Robin. Sorry, Coleen, may I cut in? (Goodness, I think that dates me...do people still do that at dances?)

Like the way this came out. Shall we dance?

Nice Robin. That song conjures up some memories for me...my dad listened to it on road trips.
