Two World, Shenyang, China, 2005

I saw two worlds represented here -- the busy world of today and the world of yesterday. The contrast between these two worlds, as well as the differences in color intensity, made me take this picture. The two big Chinese words surrounded by those red lanterns tell us that this is a busy market held each year. Many people come to buy things and watch shows here. The three old men quietly sitting in the corner are left out of this busy world. Perhaps they just prefer to stay aloof from worldly affairs and simply find peace for themselves?

what a contrast! in malaysia the older people r often the most active ones in this kind of celebrations. if u have been to south-east-asia u would probably know that chinese here inherited most of the traditions and custumory celebrations, including those once banned in mainland china.

Hi Jen, because you say it is a buizy market otherwise it is totaly out of my range... I supose I wold have understood it if I wold know Chineese, however, as you put it it is an incongruity that is trwo one other of the incongruities of China I imagine, though perhaps what most caught my eye at first are the lamps basicly doe to the size inconguity between the left lamps piled up one untop of the other and the big red light at the left, after that I saw the old man having a talk and this similar old building like protecting them from the outside, disconecting them of context... or even of the wrest of the world but combined with the 'old' lights, the building and the man, in a certain way it was also as if it took me to old times. I also think that the powerfull red colors are a good point in the photo.

***Another New Year's image --with its rich colors contrasting strongly to the black clad old men in those chairs who have turned their backs on this display of color and seem oblivious to it. These men share each other, but seem cut of from todays world. They are "Old China" --a theme you often express in your imagery. It is social comment, purely and simply. You are bit far from the old men to get much emotion into the image -- the detail in their faces is very small and I struggle to see them. But I still can feel their isolation from the community, represented by the vivid red lanterns that scream for attention.

There is a double incogruousness here. The miao hui (can we say a carnival?) attracting no one but the three old men are enjoy themselves under the huge red lantern as if without knowing IT. IMO, we don't need too much contrast here, and it is pleasing to my eyes. Thank you again.
