When this beetle first landed on the wall of my house where I was shooting milipedes,
I thought that its rear end had been bitten off by some predator. It was only after
I got my Peterson Field Guide to beetles of North America that I discovered that it was actually built that way.
So, I'm sure that it's an engraver beetle, but my guess about it being a pine engraver is based on
the fact that it seemed to come from a piece of a pine stump that my son had sitting on the driveway.
