Norman Ernest Dyck
September 12, 1952 - September 27, 2023
Norman Dyck was born to parents Ernest and Lydia (Krahn) Dyck, while they were completing French studies in Brussels, Belgium. Before his second birthday, his family was living in what is now called the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). By the time Norm was 18, he had moved 20 times. These included moves from Belgium to the Congo, to Kansas, to British Columbia, back to the DRC, to Alberta, then to twelve or thirteen different communities in Quebec.
His fascination with aviation led him to train for a career in air traffic control. Norm remained passionate about the field until his final days. He started his career in Sept-Îles and then moved on to Baie-Comeau, Montreal, Quebec City, Cornwall, Ottawa, and in 1995 to Winnipeg, Manitoba
He married Trudy Schroeder in 1981, and they embarked on a life that was highlighted by the addition of two daughters, Nina and Katrina. Norman and his family thrived with a rich mixture of friends, family members, travels, hobbies, and laughter. Norman was an avid fisherman, hunter, hiker, biker, cross-country skier, storyteller, canoeist, cottager, reader, chess puzzler, cook, and family navigator.
Over the years, Norman volunteered with many organizations. He looked for ways to help people in our community through coaching team sports, providing literacy training, assisting with refugee and immigrant language training, helping in homeless shelters, visiting elderly and sick community members, and supporting many arts and cultural initiatives and programs.
Norman is mourned by his wife, Trudy Schroeder, and daughters, Nina (Mark) Schroeder-van't Schip of Amstelveen, Netherlands, and Katrina (Ary) Schroeder-Williams of Ottawa; brother, Stanley Dyck (Joanne) of Naples, Florida and sister, Ruth Cusson (Jean) of Quebec City; mother-in-law, Augusta Schroeder, and Trudy’s brothers, Ken (Cathy), David (Vera), and Richard (Allison), and their families.
A memorial service will be held at River East Church, 755 McLeod Avenue on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. If friends or family members would like to donate to a charity, Norman suggested that gifts could be made to the Canadian Mennonite University or to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for the Sistema Winnipeg program.
