Umbria is one of the central regions of Italia, sitting between the better known cities of Firenze (Florence) in the north (not on this map) and Roma (Rome) in the south, which IS on this map, because, of course it is. It also extends a fair way into the centre of the country, coming up against the Apennine mountain chain and, of course, Assisi. Most regions in Italia are made up of smaller provinces, and in this case we are in the Umbrian province of Perugia.
Although we had driven down from San Marino to the north (also not on this map; it's near the eastern coast) the previous day, we bypassed Assisi and went to a town about 25 minutes away called Foligno to spend the night. Why, I'm not sure; there are indeed hotels in Assisi itself but they may not be as economical, or overnight parking for the coach may not have been available, who knows?
Foligno is not a tourist hot spot but I'm still kicking myself that I didn't get out in the evening and early morning to get some shots of it. There were an absurd number of lost opportunities on that trip, and they will, of course, never come again.
