As mentioned in the main text of this gallery, Assisi sits on the western edge of one of the mountains in the Apennines. Not all of it, though. As can be seen from this contour map, the bulk of the town including the main basilica is up a relatively steep hill.
However a significant "frazione" (suburb, more or less) of the town is down on the plains, as will be seen in several photos in this gallery. Sitting about 4km away from the main town is the frazione of Santa Maria degli Angeli. This contains the main railway station as well as another significant basilica, which is named after that town. Inside that building one can find the original, basic church (known as La Porziuncola) in which St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) found his calling.
