09 Small Spices, Big Flavor

Boulder, CO

This is a 125 shot focus stack. The biggest one I've tried so far. I used a tripod and timer release for this, but I did the stacking in camera. It took less than a minute, which is pretty impressive for 125 shots. I cropped a little (not much) and enhanced in Lightroom. A gold star for whoever can name all the spices here.

Well, it looks like our group isn't that spicy! All you can come up with is cloves? OK, I'll tell you what's in the picture, besides cloves. The big (comparatively) one in the middle is star anise. Above that are a couple of cardamoms. Next to that (clockwise) is crushed red pepper, a bit of lemon peel, some fennel seeds and some mustard seeds. The thing that looks a bit like tree bark on the right is cinnamon. The cloves are at the bottom of the picture. Continuing clockwise we have three peppercorns and two whole allspice things (I don't know what you call them). So there are actually ten in all. I had forgotten the lemon peel pieces when I said there were eight in addition to the cloves. The mustard seeds are actually tiny. It's amazing what a macro lens can do!

BTW, this is by far the better processing. Best Wishes, Traveller (a great image)

The size of the image in megapixels is always the same. From the R6II it's a 24MP image. From the R7 it's a 32.5MP image. In terms of MB, the OOC JPEG is pretty much normal. The main difference in size depends on how much detail there is in the image. I just checked the different OOC JPEGs for this shot. It turns out I did six different ones. The sizes range from 6.4MB to 8.9MB. The smaller ones were the stacks with fewer images, but that's because the area of sharp focus didn't extend all the way to the back, so there was less detail in the image. Even though 'stack' suggests that you're adding the shots together, what's actually happening is that the best focused slices of each shot are being added together.

out of curiosity, what is the finished size of such a large stacked image? Does it become progressively larger with each stack or not? just how does this work. Best wishes, T

I started out with 35, and just kept increasing the number until I got the depth I wanted. I think this was the fourth attempt. The stacking in camera is so quick and easy that you can do trial and error until you get what you want. No garlic. This was all dried spices. I have plenty of fresh garlic and ginger, but I wanted just the dried ones for this shot. Cloves is correct. There are eight others here. I'll see whether you guys can name any more, before I list them all. :)

BTW, I see the cloves, but no garlic?

I’m only good at naming spices after I read the label on the jar. Although there are times I highly mispronounce the names even as I read the label. I can’t name even one of these from this photo. Paul

125 - wow. I am currently using Photshop to stack, which has some issues. Also, 125 images would take a long time to process in PS.
I may go back and try Helicon which I used a few years ago.

Wow. How did you decide on 125?
