Alastair. This is a western honey bee. Most of them have been Africanized. The flower is about 3 cm across, making the bee a bit less than 1 cm long. Jim

That’s bigger than my bee! In fact, is that a bee or a wasp (or hornet)? There’s been a lot of chatter on our neighborhood email list about the dearth of bees this year. The one (or two?) I photographed in my backyard the other day are the first I’ve seen this year, and pretty small. Alastair
