Another sign of spring is when the Spring Peepers begin calling, often while the vernal pools in the forests are still rimmed with ice. Returning birds are a spring harbinger,yes, but listen for the calls of this tiny frog and you'll know spring truly is imminent!
By late summer you can hear peepers calling again, though just isolated calls, not the chorus of calls one hears in spring. They are also fairly easy to see, hanging out on vegetation in late summer. These small frogs need vernal pools (temporary pools) in which to breed, after breeding the frogs head to upland areas, followed later by newly hatched frogs.
