160906_120437_0998 GPS Is Not An Option

Near Via Faenza, Firenze, Italia

We decided to head out to find a place to eat for lunch. In theory this should not be difficult in Firenze where there is an abundance of restaurants. I had made a note of some preferred places based on their reviews, but we simply couldn't find them. Whether they had gone out of business or what, I have no idea.

Olympus cameras do not have built-in GPS which is, let us be blunt, a pain in the backside. They do have a fiddly, awkward little phone app which, if you remember to sync everything up first, and turn it on, and then match it to your photos via Wi-Fi (assuming that your phone hasn't run out of battery which will corrupt the tracking log)... well, if you do all of that, you may end up with GPS tagging in your photos. Most of the time.

Of course there is also Google Maps, which I relied upon during the 2016 trip since I didn't have even the app back then. It's probably better if you review your logs closer to the time that they were created rather than more than 4 years after the event, as I'm doing at the moment.

If one is to believe Google Maps' timeline, we were at the Été Bistrò at Via Faenza, 55 between 11:58 AM and 12:56 PM. This shot was taken at 12:04, so that sounds right. And looking at the location on the maps, I know that this was the general area that I took us to. I can't remember the exact place that I was looking for, but it was in this area.

There are 2 problems. The first is that according to Yelp, the restaurant is closed. The second is that looking at historical photos of that particular bistro, it looked a lot more hip and modern rather than traditional like this restaurant. And it did not, as far as I can see, have an outdoor dining area like this one. In fact, I have not been able to find any restaurants in this area which have such outdoor dining.

Oddly, I can't find any receipts or credit card transaction details relating to the lunch either. I have a vague recollection that we may have paid cash, though as most people should have found in the past, is most unwise to rely on memory.

In short, I remember rather than know that the restaurant was somewhere in the area of Via Faenza. The specifics? I don't really recall beyond that it was an enjoyable lunch in a relatively enjoyable place.
