Trois hommes sont affectés par rotation au service du phare et assurent des quarts 24 heures sur 24. Le planning est le suivant : deux hommes en permanence sur le phare pendant un mois suivie d’une période de repos de deux semaines sur l’île de Sein. L'allumage et l'extinction du feu, le nettoyage et l’entretien du phare, la cuisine constituaient les principaux événements de la vie quotidienne des gardiens. Pendant les quarts de nuit (les plus longs duraient de 9 à 10 heures), le travail consistait en priorité à veiller au bon fonctionnement du feu dans la lanterne, mais aussi à observer l'horizon maritime.. Les conditions de vie sur le phare de même que le transit phare-bateau au-dessus des vagues énormes sont si difficiles que les gardiens dénomment Ar Men : l’Enfer des enfers.

Three men worked on rotation into the lighthouse and provide 24-hour shifts. The schedule is as follows: two men permanently on the lighthouse for one month followed by a rest period of two weeks on the Isle of Sein. The lighting and extinguishing of the fire, the cleaning and maintenance of the lighthouse, the cooking were the main events in the daily life of the guards.
