Ar-Men.

Mer d'Iroise.

After the sinking of the paddle steamer « Sané » on the reefs of the very dangerous Chaussée de Sein that occurred during the night of 23 to 24 September 1859 (shipwreck following many others) the French Marine authorities decide to build a lighthouse to the west of the terrible reefs.

The engineers chose a rock called Ar-Men (The Rock in Breton) whose surface reached 105 square meters. The rock is only discovered at low tide during the calm summer seas.
No Marine Nationale worker wants to risk going there. Finally, a team of Senans became volunteers…
The first time they set foot on the reef they can only work 20 minutes.
